Novo Nordisk closed its internal cell therapy unit in Q1 2026 and licensed the asset to AI-native platform Cellular Intelligence, even as the company posted strong quarterly earnings and a rising share price.1 Rather than keep funding an in-house discovery program, the pharma giant handed the asset to an outside specialist and kept its balance sheet focused on its core GLP-1 franchise.1
The restructuring lands amid a cluster of NVIDIA-backed AI biotech launches. BioNeMo, MindWalk's HYFT and ReefIQ platforms, Boltz Lab, Owkin, Natera, Basecamp Research and Edison Scientific have all launched in rapid succession since early 2026, alongside NVIDIA's expanding role as infrastructure provider to Thermo Fisher and Eli Lilly.2
MindWalk's HYFT Technology illustrates the shift. The proprietary system builds a function-aware representation of biology from roughly 660 million biological patterns, universal fingerprints that encode conserved relationships between sequence, structure and function.2 MindWalk argues that drug discovery data is normally scattered across files, formats, systems and teams, and that before AI can reason usefully about a biological question, that fragmented information has to be reconnected into a single, governed, queryable web of context.3
The company filed a new patent, EP26187897.9, in July, adding a computational layer on top of its foundational HYFT patent, EP3881326A1, rather than refiling it.4 MindWalk also gave the first public demonstration of ReefIQ, its newer platform, the same month.3 Its stated bet: the representation of biology itself is the hard, durable part of drug discovery, ahead of the models built on top of it.2
Combined with Novo Nordisk's Q1 results, the licensing deal suggests investors are rewarding pharma companies that lean on AI-native partners instead of carrying discovery infrastructure themselves. The pattern across Thermo Fisher, Eli Lilly and now Novo Nordisk points to partnership, not in-house buildout, as the industry's near-term path to AI-driven drug discovery.
